Staying on the path of salvation takes a righteous mind

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
Romans 10 -9-11 Psalms 51 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalms 51

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Mark 16:16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Seeking God and having a personal relationship with him takes commitment and denial. Commitment to his will and and way and denial from the works and sin and carnality.
